The New Oxford American Dictionary has released its 2009 "word of the year" and in what should come as no surprise to anybody, it's a social media term: Unfriend.
Removing somebody who has become a pest on Facebook or other social media/networking platforms is widely known as "unfriending" said person. With one quick click of your mouse, you unfriend someone and no longer are subjected to his or her status updates or posted links. To be completely honest, I'm a bit surprised that "unfriend" wasn't the word of the year in 2008 when everybody weighed in on the Presidential Election at some point via their Facebook status. Many people couldn't stand the constant bickering about their Facebook friends favorite political candidate at the expense of the other political party. Getting drilled by constant campaign ads on TV is enough to make most people nauseous, but reading 20 updates a day via a friends Facebook status just got to be too much.
The runners-up? Netbook and sexting. You think your grandparents (or even your parents) would have surmised that these three words would be be the top candidates for word of the year?
Please be kind and don't unfriend Celtic on Facebook or Twitter.
